Audible has more than a million audiobooks and almost none of what is on this page. These stories were written in Mzansi, about people who live here, and now you can hear them.
Search for romance audiobooks and you will find a million of them. Search for a story set in a Middelburg workshop, or a Sandton boardroom, or a township bedroom on a Sunday morning — with people who sound like people you know — and the shelf goes quiet.
That is the gap this library fills. Every audiobook here started as a No Safe Word story: Black South African romance and erotic fiction, written by our own authors, and now narrated end to end. You cannot get them on Audible. You cannot get them on Spotify. They are not licensed from anywhere, because they were written here.
What "free" actually means
The rule is simple enough to say in one line: whatever you can read for free, you can hear for free.
Every story on the site opens with a complete first chapter that costs nothing and needs no account. In audio, that whole first chapter is narrated and free to play. From the second chapter onward, the opening section of each chapter is free to read — and the same opening is free to listen to.
There is no trial that quietly starts charging you. There is no credit that expires at the end of the month. There is no card required to press play. If you want to go past the free portion, a single story unlocks for R29 or the whole library for R55 a month, and both give you the text and the audio together — you are never asked to buy the same story twice in two formats.
When people actually listen
We built this around three moments, because those are the three our readers kept describing.
The commute. Taxi, train, or the crawl up the N1. Headphones in, an hour to kill, surrounded by strangers who cannot see what is on your screen. Audio is the most private way to read something like this in a public place, which is part of why it works so well for these particular stories.
Late, in bed, lights off. This is the one that needs no explanation. It is how most of these stories were read before there was audio, and hearing them read aloud in the dark is a different experience to reading them — slower, and closer.
Hands busy, mind free. Cooking. Cleaning. The gym. Doing your hair, which can be three hours you are never getting back. This is the occasion the big platforms sell hardest, and it works just as well for a romance novel as it does for a business book.
What is in the library
The catalogue is being narrated title by title and new audiobooks land every week, so what follows is a shape rather than a list.
There are short, complete stories you can start and finish inside a single commute. There are full serialised novels running to a dozen chapters or more, the kind you live with for a fortnight. There are the tropes people come looking for by name — second chance, slow burn, age gap, dark romance — and there is the explicit end of the catalogue, which is narrated exactly as written and not softened for audio.
Every narrated title carries a headphone marker wherever it appears on the site, and you can filter the library down to only the stories that have audio.
How to start
Open any story with a headphone marker and press play on chapter one. There is nothing to install, nothing to sign up for, and nothing to download unless you want to — it streams in the browser on a phone the same as on a laptop.
If a story holds you, the rest of it is a tap away. If it does not, you have lost nothing but the walk to the taxi rank.

FAQ
Are these audiobooks really free?
Yes, and with no card and no trial. The whole of chapter one is free to hear on every story, and the opening of every chapter after that is free too. It is the same rule as the text: whatever you can read free, you can hear free. Going past the free portion costs R29 for one story or R55 a month for the whole library, and that includes both reading and listening.
Who narrates the audiobooks?
The narration is generated, not recorded by a voice actor. We say so plainly because it matters: what took the longest was not choosing a pleasant voice but finding one that could pronounce our characters properly. Most narrators mangle Zulu, Xhosa and Sotho names — flattening the vowels, stressing the wrong syllable, turning a person into a mispronunciation. We tested until the names came out right, and we keep a pronunciation list that grows with every new title.
Can I download them to listen offline?
Yes, once the story is yours — bought on its own or covered by a membership. On My books, tap "Save audio" and the chapters are stored on the phone so they play with no signal at all. It is never automatic: the size is shown before you start, one tap removes it again, and it is cleared when you sign out, so nothing is left behind on a shared phone.
Do I need an app?
No. It plays in the browser on any phone, tablet or computer. There is nothing to install and nothing that will notify you at an awkward moment.
How long are the audiobooks?
It varies by story, and deliberately so. Some are short enough to finish in one sitting on the way to work; the serialised novels run to a dozen chapters or more. Each story shows its total listening time so you know what you are starting.
Is the whole library narrated?
Not yet — we are working through it and new audiobooks go live every week. You can filter the library to show only the stories that already have audio.
Is the audio explicit?
Where the story is, yes. Nothing is softened or cut for audio: an explicit chapter is narrated as written. Every story carries a spice rating from one to five chillies so you know before you press play.
