In Durban, respectability has witnesses. Church aunties notice dresses. Parents notice late arrivals. Everybody has an opinion about what a young woman should want, and everybody calls it love. Nokuthula has learned to survive that attention by becoming small. Her thoughts stay private. Her body stays covered. Her future stays tidy. Then a pastor’s rebellious visitor arrives in a red BMW and looks at her as though he can see the whole restless woman beneath the cardigan. Their afternoon begins with a city tour and ends with a question no sermon can answer for her. Between the Botanic Gardens, an empty family house and one closed bedroom door, Thula must decide whether obedience has ever really been the same thing as peace. For the first time, the answer belongs to her alone. The world calls some temptations dangerous because they change you. What if change is exactly what she has been waiting for?
