CHAPTER 4: THE WRONG ONE
THE WRONG ONE
The car wasn't making a noise and she knew it.
Evening. The Highveld sky that deep purple that comes before the stars. Sibusiso's workshop was closing — one light burning over his workbench. He was cleaning up, radio playing Maskandi softly, moving with the easy rhythm of a man who knows his space.
He looked up when she pulled in. Smiled.
"The car again?"
"It's making a sound."
He didn't pretend to check. Just got two Cokes and sat down on the crate like they'd been doing this for years.
They talked. Stars came out — more than you'd see in Joburg, because Middelburg is still small enough to have a proper sky. He told her about a 1972 Beetle he was restoring — original paint, engine seized. "She'll run again," he said, and she heard the way he talked about broken things: not as problems, but as things waiting to work.
She asked about his family. His mother in Standerton. A sister at university — he was helping with fees. He said it simply. No performance.
"Why a workshop?" she asked.
"Because when something is broken and you fix it, you know exactly what you did. It's honest."

The air changed. She felt it the way you feel a storm coming — pressure shifting, something electric. He was looking at her. Present. Like she was the only thing in the Middelburg night worth seeing.
Her phone had buzzed twice. She hadn't checked.
He reached for her hand. Palm up. An invitation.
She took it.
"Stay," he said.
