CHAPTER 3: THE GOOD CHOICE

THE GOOD CHOICE

Langa was building a house. He wanted her to see it.

Late afternoon. The new development on the edge of Middelburg where the town gives way to open veld. His house was the furthest along — walls up, roof on, windows in. Still smelled like paint and fresh plaster.

He walked her through the empty rooms with quiet pride. The kitchen — "big enough for a proper Sunday lunch." The lounge — "the light in the afternoons, you should see it." The spare room he hadn't named but they both knew the word for. Their footsteps echoed on bare tile, and dust motes drifted through the golden light pouring through unfinished window frames.

It was tangible. The life. The plan, made real.

They ended up back in the kitchen. New countertops, solid stone, still cool under her fingertips. Langa leaned against the counter beside her, and the late sun caught his jaw, the line of his neck. He looked at her with quiet intention.

He kissed her. She kissed him back.

His hands moved to the small of her back, pulling her closer, and she could feel the heat of him through his shirt — solid, certain. He kissed her neck, just below her ear, and she tilted her head back, a soft sound escaping her lips before she could catch it. He kissed down the line of her throat to her collarbone, teeth grazing skin, and a pulse of warmth spread through her chest and lower.
