"What . . ." I stumble, still in a confused stupor. "What are you doing?" I pull my body away from Zondi's the second we're out of the bar. Part of me liked the weight of his arm across my shoulders, but most of me is beyond confused as to what is going on.
Zondi looks almost as stunned as I am by his little public display, standing frozen right outside the busiest bar on Florida Road.
A different band is coming out of every doorway down the road.
"Haibo — it's Big Z!" someone shouts, pulling out a phone and taking a picture of the club's hard man.
"Zondi!" More pictures, more flashes.
"Fuck," Zondi mutters under his breath, dipping his head down, trying to hide a bit.
"Is this the newest one?" a random onlooker asks. My head snaps in his direction when I realise he means me. "What is she, coloured? She doesn't look like your usual type."
My eyes widen at the statement as my body warms, embarrassment flushing me. Wrong, and not for the first time in my life, and not a thing I have ever once found a way to correct out loud. I can feel the weight of a dozen sets of eyes on me, never mind the endless camera flashes.
As quickly as I can, I turn in the opposite direction and run, needing to get away from this scene.
"Vuyi, wait!" Zondi calls out, chasing me down. And because he's just shy of two metres, and his legs are practically tree trunks of muscle, he catches up to me in no time.

What happened next is the reason this story exists.
