CHAPTER 3: THE CHECKLIST

The weeks after that night moved like honey — slow, sweet, with a richness that made him greedy for more. They saw each other twice more. Dinner in Nelspruit. A Saturday where she drove to Middelburg and he showed her the development site and she asked questions about structural engineering that no woman had ever asked him.

He called her on a Tuesday evening. His voice steady because he'd rehearsed it.

"Refilwe. I don't want to keep guessing where this is going. I know what I want. I want us to be serious about this."

Silence on the line. The kind that has shape to it.

"Langa." Her voice was gentle. That was the first sign. Refilwe was never gentle. "You're incredible. You know that."

He heard the but before she said it.

"I have a whole life here in Nelspruit. And honestly... there's someone. Someone who's been around for a while. I haven't given him a proper chance because I was caught up in this — in us — but he's..." She paused. Choosing words. "He's ticking the right boxes for me, Langa. For where I am, for what I need. I owe it to myself to see where that goes."

He was quiet for a long time. The word boxes sat between them like a stone on a counter.

"I see," he said. Because his pride was a wall and nothing was getting past it.

"You deserve someone who's all in. I can't be that. Not when I know there's something else I need to explore."

He said something about understanding. About wishing her well. All the things you say when the ground has moved and you're pretending it hasn't.
