It feels strange, being here again.
Kimberley hasn't felt like home in a long time. When I signed in England I moved Mma out of the old house in Hadison Park and bought her one in Bloemfontein, round the corner from my eldest sister. My three sisters all married and settled with their families elsewhere. So there's nothing here for me.
Well. There's one thing in this city for me right now.
Chandré is at her mother's house. Even though her brother, that selfish bastard, went off at her and told her not to come to the ceremony, she made the trip anyway. She chose to stay at her parents' place instead of with me at the hotel, which is probably wise and still irritates the life out of me. I'm not sure Cliff even knows she's here. When I spoke to her earlier she hadn't seen him.
Mma came down with me. This afternoon I took her past the Cupido place for what was supposed to be ten minutes. Ma Trienie had the kettle on before we were through the door, and Chandré came up the passage barefoot with her hair half done and stopped dead when she saw who was sitting at her mother's table. My mother held both her hands long past the point where you'd let go, and neither of them said much. It didn't matter.

What happened next is the reason this story exists.
