Part 11 of 13
Chapter 11 - The Birth Announcement
297 words · 1 min read

I saw the birth announcement on Instagram.
Naledi Ndlovu, born 15 March. 3.3 kg. Perfect in every way. Amahle and Themba are over the moon.
The photo showed Amahle in a hospital bed, glowing despite the exhaustion, holding a tiny bundle while Themba sat beside her, his arm around her shoulders, both of them looking at their daughter with pure love.
I stared at it for a long time.
I'd been sober for six months. Finally admitted I had a problem, that I'd been using alcohol to numb the guilt and shame. I was working the steps, making amends where I could.
I'd tried to reach out to Amahle. To apologize properly, to tell her I understood now what I'd thrown away. Her attorney had sent me a letter of demand. I didn't blame her.
I'd moved to Cape Town, started teaching music at a college in Observatory. It wasn't glamorous, but it was honest work. I was helping kids who reminded me of myself at that age — talented but directionless, passionate but undisciplined.
I'd met someone. Faith, a music teacher at the same college. She was kind, patient, willing to deal with my baggage. We were taking it slow. Very slow.
I didn't know if I'd ever be capable of the kind of love Themba gave Amahle. The kind of selfless, devoted, show-up-every-day love that built a life instead of destroying it.
But I was trying. Trying to be better. Trying to learn from my mistakes.
I looked at the photo one more time, then closed Instagram.
Amahle had moved on. She was happy. She had everything she deserved.
And I had to accept that I would never be part of that happiness.
Maybe that was okay. Maybe that was growth.
Maybe that was enough.
