Vuyelwa Duma

I've been a ball of nerves all day. I have no idea what's going to happen tonight. I don't know what he's going to say, what I'm going to say, or where things will stand once it's all over.

What I do know is that I'm wearing an awfully see-through pair of panties under my jeans in the hope that Zondi will be seeing them and subsequently tearing them off.

A physical relationship would be easy. It's what I think I can handle and what he wanted initially, but now he won't take it without something more. And something more with him scares me.

Everything magnifies with him. If I thought I was broken after Wesley, that's not even comparable to the level of destruction Zondi could leave in his wake. On the flip side, what I thought was love with my ex isn't on the same field as where my feelings could go if I open my heart to the possibility of Zondi.

It's all terrifying.

I sign in at the desk downstairs, and the concierge sends me up in the private resident lift — a lift that goes to exactly one flat. As it climbs, my throat is thick with nerves. The building is stunning and pristine. Money in the form of walls. I do the sum in my head anyway, the way I always do, of what a month in a building like this costs against what Highveld pays me, and the answer is the same as it always is. The exclusive hallway off the lift to his place is clean and modern but cold.

Swallowing down the instinct to run, I knock twice on the big mahogany door of Zondi's penthouse, but after a minute, there's no answer.
