AYANDA
Five years later
Seated on the couch in the lounge, I smile when the press of warm lips on the top of my head brings me back from my racing thoughts.
"You look worried," Vusi says, leaning over me from behind with his big hands on my shoulders, forever my steady presence.
I close the book on my lap and place my hand atop his, tipping my chin up for a kiss.
He leans down and tastes me softly before nipping at my bottom lip to make me smile. "What worries you, beautiful?"
"You're home early from work," I reply, avoiding the topic.
Vusi knows me too well.
Searching my face, he lets his gaze flick to my mouth as a slight frown mars his forehead. He straightens up, rounds the couch, and crouches down in front of me with his hands braced on my knees. "Talk to me, sthandwa sami."
Worrying my bottom lip, I study the new lines around his eyes and the flecks of grey in his hair. I sit forward, running my fingers over the short strands, and he turns his head to kiss my palm.
"What if we pass our genetics on to our baby."
He looks at me, and the fire I see there has me sucking in a breath.
