# Chapter 42
VUSI
Fast asleep on her side with the cat curled up against her chest, she looks like an innocent dream that I want to turn into a nightmare and corrupt beyond repair. The voices are silent for now, soothed by her presence.
Standing by her bedside, I stroke her hair away from her brow. My own pull down low. Why is it that my chest always tightens in her presence? The urge to be around her, near her, to touch her, kiss her, and claim her tugs at my heart. I don't like how powerless she makes me feel, yet I can't stay away. I don't want to stay away. Not when she's the sun that parts the clouds or the silence that calms the voices inside my head.
The cat hisses as I slide a hand beneath its furry belly. I put it down outside in the passage, then shut the door. Ayanda whimpers, and my head snaps in her direction. I watch her sleep, listening to her deep breathing.
When I finally cross the room, my big frame snuffs out the strip of moonlight that falls over her sleeping form. The urge to touch her makes me heady. My hands clench at my sides. I do this every night—watch her sleep for hours.
She looks at peace.
It would be a shame to steal her from her sweet dreams and toss her into my nightmare, but she chose to play with the devil. And I need a damn taste.
